The weather in Bristol was mild and sunny. We didn't waste the good time and wandered around the heart of the city.

Itinerary:
1. Lunch at Dynasty (Chinese cuisine);
2. Queen Square and the old city centre (incl. the oldest pub in Bristol);
3. Millennium Square;
4. Bristol Cathedral;
5. College Green;
6. University of Bristol;
7. Brandon Hill Nature Park and the Cabot Tower;
8. Dinner at Zero Degrees (Italian Cuisine).

Land is a scarce resource in HK. That's why the architects endeavour to build as large the floor area as possible from a small plot of land. Although the Britain is not a big country, the citizens are more fond of open space. During town planning, the planners try to insert more grassland and parks in the cities. However, I don't think they are good town planners. It seems that new building sites are not properly regulated. New buildings rise amongst the old ones. It's just a mess!

Queen Square is just like a green carpet at the city heart. It is embraced by stone-paved road and a series of old English style buildings. Time seems moving backwards to the 19th century. Some of them are even over 300 years old!! Though Bristol is not the largest city in England, there is a theatre here which is claimed to be the oldest one on the Island.

The parking ticket selling machine worths some more description. First, you insert some sterlings into the machine. Then, a ticket with time will then be issued. This ticket is to be displayed on the windscreen for spot checking by the officers.

Just a block away is the oldest pub in Bristol - the Smugglers Bar. But what do/did they smuggle? Only God knows. There are some other pubs in the area. At weekends, the air is often filled up with gossips and casual talks.

Bristol is one of the key ports by the mouth of the Severn. That's why there are a few quays at the city heart. As quays feed a lot of dockers, it is natural that many pubs and restaurants are situated nearby. Besides human, quays also feed sea gulls, a very common bird in Bristol. They are as common as sparrows in HK. They are white-headed and chested with a pair of grey wings. When they stand, they look like gentlemen in tuxedo. But don't be cheated by their outlook. They are as annoying as crows. They are much bigger and stronger than sparrows. Hence, they can turn over the trashes and look for food debris from gabbage.

The Millennium Square is on the other side of the aorta of the city. It is built in modern architecture. We didn't spend much time here. We walked straight up to a slightly elevated area where the Bristol Cathedral is situated.

It is recorded that a church has probably stood on this site for over a thousand years. It became prominence in the 12th century. It was built in the medieval design - Gothic architecture. Gothic architecture is featured by its elegance and complexity. A good photo taking site.

I think College Green is named because it's close to the University of Bristol. But it's not that close to the main campus of the University. Instead, it is just next to the Bristol Cathedral. It is a large open space covered with grass. At the western end of the College Green is believed to be the Bristol municipal building.  On a sunny afternoon, there are a few people sitting on this green carpet. They are either reading or just walking their dogs. Some may form a circle and have their private camp-fire like gatherings. With the warm sunlight and soft grass, it is very hard to resist lying on the grass and feel the mild breeze. Better than this, of course, is to read something. It would be much easier to get yourself connected with the literary giants.

There is also an old but lovely building next to the Cathedral - the Marriott Hotel. The outlook of the Marriott is similar to the Peninsula in HK. The Queen's statue stands outside the hotel. This statue is made of granitic rock. When you take a closer look, the statue's head has become greenish. And that indicates the difference between the Chinese and the British. The Chinese cannot tolerate a taint on Mao's picture. The British don't give a shit about the dirt on the statue. The birds, however, do.

The Park Street demarcates the northern boundary of the College Green and it is one of the busiest street in Bristol. When you walk up the street, you will find the main building of the University of Bristol. When you look at the second last picture, you may see that the tower on the left is polished while the rest of the building remains dull. Thanks be to the subscriptions from the overseas students!

The best place to have an overview of the city of Bristol is the Brandon Hill Nature Park. This is where the Cabot Tower stands. The Cabot Tower was built more than a hundred years ago in memory of John Cabot, the pioneer who discovered the continent which is now called Canada. It consists of a spiral staircase and two viewing platforms which overlook the city. There are reports of supernatural encounters in the tower. Believe it or not! The tower is now closed for inspection and repair due to the propagating cracks within the masonry blocks. The park is featured with different soft landscapes. It is a perfect site for photo lovers.

It was a Saturday. The weather was mild with abundant sunlight. Our activities were mainly within the heart of Bristol. Fresh air was free and of unlimited supply from the trees. Birds chirping were also free of charge. We walked down the Perry Road and enjoyed the colourful small houses by the roadside. And there was where we were heading to dine in. But first of all, let's get a glass of fresh beer.

"Zero Degrees" are renowned for its freshly made beer in their micro-breweries. Our family friend had pale ale while I had wheat ale. In its pale brownish colour, wheat ale is quite easy to drink. It has a strong flavour of wheat. Half a pint of beer only costs you GBP 1.50. There's an outdoor area where you may enjoy your beer and the beautiful city at the same time. While we were chit-chatting and sipping our beer, there were balloons of different colours and patterns floating in the mid-air. They give extra beauty to the peaceful city.

Zero Degrees also serve Italian food. The most popular dish is the mussel kilo pot (i.e. a kilo of mussels). Of course, the kilo pot was our target by norm. We had pasta, pizza and desserts as well.

Pappardelle (GBP 9.25) - it's a very broad fettuccine. This pasta is served with spicy sausage, mushrooms and cream. It was not very creamy. The taste was seasoned with spicy sausage and the aroma of mushroom. The pasta was firm but not too hard or too soft. It could be graded as "al dente";

Linguini (GBP 9.25) - it contains mussels, squid, anchovies and cherry tomato. Again, the pasta did not disappoint us. The seafood was fresh and juicy. The linguini was well-textured without the floury taste of fresh pasta. It was of "al dente" grade as well;

Mussels kilo pot (GBP 12.50) -  The mussels were served in a small silvery bucket. The amount of mussels served was indeed jaw-dropping. The mussels were fresh and juicy and the taste was further uplifted by white wine, basil, parmesan and cream. All these were mouth-watering ingredients;

Four seasons pizza (GBP 7.95) - It is so named as there are different ingredients on each quandrant of the pizza. The toppings include mushrooms, pepperoni, anchovies, olives & tomato sauce. The pizza is of southern Italian style, which is featured by its light taste and fruity toppings. The crust itself is crispy and porous. Thanks be to the suitably mixed flour and brewer's yeast;

Apple tart & New York cheese cake - The desserts were sizeable. Perhaps too much for us after kilograms of mussels and pasta. The desserts were also too sweety and burdened much on taste buds. After all, Caucasians are more tolerant to sweety desserts than the Chinese.

The average expenditure per head is around GBP 13.0. I consider it as one of the must-go restaurant in Bristol.

It was the first overseas trip after our marriage. That's why I name it a deferred honeymoon trip. My wife spent 2 whole weeks at her best friend's home in Bristol while I joined her a week later. Due to my job nature, I have a long working hours in HK. Obviously, I am deterred to have a tight schedule.

The main theme of our honeymoon is "to slow down and take our time". We did visit a few scenic sites like Bristol city centre, Bath, Clifton and Clevedon. We also had a few fabulous Chinese cuisine. (yes! Chinese cuisine. You will know why after you have finished reading my scripts). And I had the most intensive reading in my life, even more intensive than my college days. There are two reasons for this. First, the books in Bristol (I can say on the whole British island) are much cheaper than in HK. Some of them only cost barely more than GBP 3.00 or just one-third of the price in HK!! The other thing is that there is plenty of open space covered with grass and trees. It is so tempting to read a book under the tree shadow in a sunny day.

The scarecrow works faithfully without a word.

It took more than 2 hours from Heathrow to Bristol. After a brief settlement at my friend's home, my wife and I started to browse around this peaceful city.

Unlike HK where it is described as a forest of concrete, there are plenty of vegetation in Bristol. There's a small pond near Stapleton (a suburb area in Bristol). You can see a lot of birds there, including mandarin duck, teal, swan and others that you may not be able to name it. I think the lake is an artificial one, however, it's evident that the landscape architect tried to minimize the human footprints on this natural habitat.

Without the fear of avian flu, bird feeding is a common activity there. The people here are more friendly to wild lives. If your motions are gentle enough, the birds will become less cautious and come close to you. The bird feeds (i.e. bread) can easily be obtained from Tesco (a local chain supermarket just like Park'N Shop in HK) just a few blocks away from the pond. With discount, a loaf of bread may be as low as only GBP 1.00.

It's a Friday night and i had the very first English fish & chips. Harvester is a popular chain pub & grill in England. There are already three shops near Bristol.
The British are famous for his sense of humour. But without beer, they might be as monotonous as the Germans, b'coz they are able to come up with more jokes when slightly intoxicated. So beer is as cheap as water in England.

This pub is quite spacious and can house more than 100 diners. The furniture is all made of timber. There's a small fountain and a pond in the middle. The kids love to play around it.

Instead of fish & chips, I had steaks. The price on average is to the same scale as that in HK (say the Outbacks). Firstly, we had the all-you-can-eat salad, which is complimentary for each order of the main dish. The veggies are fresh and juicy. Just as rice in Chinese cuisine, there is always potato in every main dish.

Plantation Platter (GBP 9.90 for single serving) - There are barbecued chicken wings, a half-rack of grilled ribs, spicy coated prawns, half roasted chicken, grilled pineapple, fries and corn. The roasted chicken is dry and there's not any resilence left.  On the other hand, the ribs are not so dry and more edible when mixed with the barbecue sauce. The best of all is the corn, which is sweet and juicy;

Totally stuffed mushrooms (GBP 6.49) - The mushrooms are stuffed with cheese and cherry tomato risotto. The aroma of mushroom fuses well with cheese cum tomato. Notwithstanding the presence of cheese, it is quite light and absolutely won't burden too much on your stomach.

Harvester Rack of Ribs (GBP 8.49) - I can say the standard of grilled ribs here is comparable to the best middle-class grill houses in HK. The surface is appropriately flame-grilled and able to retain the flesh juice inside.

Lamb Steak (GBP 7.99) - I like medium rare lamb steak. But when it is prepared by flame-grilling, I have no choice. When the lamb steak was served, it was obviously a bit over done. The steak was quite stiff. Some effort had to be made for chewing. There was hardly a trace of the taste of lamb flesh. A disappointing dish.

The pub was slightly undermanned during rush hours. You have to do something more to draw their attention.

The average expenditure per head is around GBP 15.00. In the UK, it is not a common practice to include a 10% service charge in the bill (it's not true for Chinese establishments). As a rule of thumb, a tips of around 10% is appropriate.

Fishponds is a small town in the north-eastern suburb of Bristol. For those who are fond of sight-seeing, it may not be a good idea to spend time in Fishponds. However, Fishponds is a typical English small town. You can smell and touch the British life there.

If you want to have a closer look of the typical English small houses, there are plenty of those in Fishponds. Some of them were even built in our grand grannies' time. As a Anglican country, chapels are commonplace everywhere in Britain. These chapels were originally served for either the private families only or the local communities. The architecture of these chapels is exactly the same as what we watch in the Harry Potter's series. Take a sweep and a pair of oval-shaped glasses and you will become Harry.

Cash Voucher.....

Heathrow Airport.

Heysel Park,

European Parliament.

Triumphal Arch.

AutoWorld Museum, Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and of Military History (Army Museum), Temple of Human Passions 同 Arts and Hostory Museum.

Army Museum.

老友Antz來了個Sizzler (smoked bacon & aged English Cheddar with tomato relish, mayo, onions, lettuce & tomato), 而我就要了一個 Mini Burger Combo, 雞牛羊, 每樣兩隻.

Musical.

Fish & Chips
Fish & Chips

一早到達 Leicester Square 既 ticket agent 買了是晚的  Phantom of the Opera.

Rib Eye Steak.

沿著Sir Matt Busby Way 直走, (Sir Matt Busby是曼聯的名領隊之一), 10多分鐘, 便到達我們的Theater of Dream, 奧脫福球場. Road to Champion.

堂兄Kim說, we come all the way to here for a cafe!!! I expect a proper restaurant, unless the food is really good. 堂兄Harry說, this is a famous shop in this area, Vicky recommended. 堂妹Vicky說, I've been here many time,
