Hong Kong-Bangkok-Athens

Two of us set off from HK.  The third person flew into Athens from London.

Black Rainstorm Signal was hoisted on 7 June and there was a road traffic standstill.  Although we ordered a taxi in advance,  the taxi driver was trapped in CLK and could not come back to town to pick us up.

Two of us arrived in Athens early in the morning on Sunday 8 June and took a taxi to the Art Hotel(I will probably get round to writing about this homely cosy hotel in detail later).  This was my first impression of Athens:  a lot of smoking,  a lot of graffiti,  very dry and hot.

Then we went to the Monastiraki Flea Market before dropping by the new Acropolis Museum and visiting a delightful confectionary (to be reviewed separately)  before dining at a very touriste roadside restaurant Neon.  Neon is a chain restaurant without much character and should be avoided if possible.  We only went there because when our friend finally reached Athens from London,  it was already very late and we went to Neon as it was close by.  Therefore I will not write about it in details.

After the first couple of days and a bit of warming up,  the trip became more enjoyable and exciting. But before then....

The area northwest of the Acropolis and Plaka is named Monastiraki, meaning 'little monastery'.  There are small narrow streets  mainly taken up by the flea market stalls that sell all sorts of souvenirs, jewelry, clothes etc.  Every Sunday there is an antique market in Avissinias Square, where merchants sell old furniture and bric-a-brac.  As we arrived in Athens on a sunday morning,  we decided to make this the first item on our itinary.

The flea market eventually leads to Monastiraki Square, which is bordered by many kebab and souvlaki restaurants, which are constantly full of locals and tourists alike.

Perhaps I was tired or perhaps I had been to many more interesting flea markets in Malta or London or Japan or China,  I did not really enjoy my stroll at the Monastiraki Flea Market.  I only bought some old postcards and first day covers.

What I enjoyed was sitting in an outdoor cafe called the Cafe Vienna and watching how local elderly people interacted.  The pigeons were cute too.  I only took a couple of photos using my mobile phone.  So I probably will not bore you with them.
