We actually arrived in Seoul after midnight but we were still hungry after settling into our hotel so the hotel concierge pointed us to this nearby fried chicken joint that was still open. This trend of Korean fried chicken and beer seemed to have exploded in popularity after the Korea drama My Love from the Star so this snack was definitely on my list of food to try. Kkanbu Chicken is a chain with offerings like garlic roast chicken, spicy chicken and more. We ordered the Crispy Chicken (₩17,000) which had been double fried and marinated with spicy seasoning. The skin was very crispy while the meat inside was juicy and succulent. I especially loved the spicy and tangy dipping sauce on the side which was just cherry on top!

The cold and wet weather on the next day was perfect for a visit to the Tteokbokki Alley in Sindang-dong which consisted of roughly ten restaurants that specializes in Korean rice cake. Most of the restaurants sell the same thing so we popped into the oldest institution Mabongnim which supposedly started it all in this alley (just look for the restaurant with a picture of a grandma on it). The tteokbokki was cooked army stew style in a large pan with gochujang, fish cakes, noodles, boiled eggs and fried dumplings. The result was rather disappointing though as it wasn't spicy enough and the rice cakes were thin and tiny. I'd rather have just the rice cakes stir-fried in spicy sauce instead of all these other stuff that I don't care for. It is really cheap at ₩11,000 for 2 people so no wonder it's popular with students.

There's no shortage of cafes in Seoul but trying to find a great cup of coffee proved to be difficult as many serve average joes disguised with syrupy flavors. However we were pleasantly surprised with the latte at this dessert & furniture cafe in the hip Garosu-gil at Sinsa-dong as it turned out that they use coffee beans from Coffee Libre, one of the top local independent roaster where even champion baristas have used their beans in competitions.

Besides coffee, the cafe also serves exquisite desserts like this Mille-feuille Chocolat au Lait (₩11,000) with layers of chocolate cream, orange glaze, ice cream and perfectly crunchy puff pastry!

One of our best meals in Seoul! Located in the Seorae Village, Soigné serves modern Korean and is helmed by Chef Jun Lee who trained under Thomas Keller at Per Se and later worked at Lincoln in New York City. The set dinner starts at ₩90,000 and it was worth every penny! Everything was like a piece of art. The menu changes several times a year and we were lucky enough to get the All Stars menu which encompasses the best dishes throughout the year. Fusion is difficult to get right but the chef really gets it here and I'm just really impressed with his vision and palate.

Best Galbi Ever! 笑臉2014-12-14

After our stroll through Bukchon, we hopped over to the artsy Samcheongdong-gil Road for lunch. A friend had recommended this restaurant to us for really good galbi (beef ribs). Even though the restaurant is located in a little back alley, it was easier to find than I thought as there was a big recognizable sign on the main street pointing the way. They do not take reservations for lunch but luckily we didn't have to wait to be seated. The restaurant itself is a hanok and we sat on the floor in a traditional style while eating. They are really famous for 3 dishes here - galbi, pork belly and dumpling soup - and we ended up trying the galbi (₩38,000 for 2) and pan-fried oyster egg dumplings (which we had picked at random). The sizzling galbi arrived in a metal pot and the ribs were huge! We were instructed to use scissors to dissect the ribs and after seeing us in clumsy action, one of the staff took over and cut everything up for us swiftly. Covered in sweet, garlicky and peppery sauce, the ribs were amazingly fragrant while so very juicy and tender to eat. One of the best galbi I've ever had in my life!

One of the Korean delicacies that I really wanted to try was ganjang gejang or soy marinated raw crabs. We were a bit apprehensive eating raw crabs outside of Japanese cuisine but decided to go for it anyways! The restaurant was not easy to find as we had arrived here by taxi and even though the driver punched in the address in his GPS, he still ended up calling the restaurant for directions. It turns out that it was located in a small alley behind a gas station. The restaurant was very homestyle and we ate sitting on the floor again. They only serve one thing - ganjang gejang- on the menu which cost ₩31,000 per person which includes a crab, banchan, steamed eggs, kimchi jjigae and rice. We didn't have to wait long before all of the food filled up our table including the crab which was full of bright orange tomalley! We just started sucking on the crab to get to the flesh and it was so fresh and sweet. Combined with the delicious soy sauce, it was perfect! A must-try in Korea! [

The chef from Soigne on Day 1 of our trip had recommended Jung Sik Dang to us, a New Korean fine dining restaurant with a branch in New York which is the first Korean restaurant to obtain 2 Michelin stars in the US. We decided to come here for lunch where 4 courses starts from ₩50,000 and it was another highlight of our meals in Seoul! They serve traditional Korean where food is highly refined and the flavors are exciting as traditional dishes are presented in a new and modern way. The decor was classy yet modern while the service was top-notch. Highly recommend and a must-try!

Our last meal in Seoul and we had to go try the legendary samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) at Tosokchon! I had heard that the queue can be hours long but I was pleasantly surprised that we were seated right away when we arrived at 6pm on a Sunday. The regular ginseng chicken soup costs ₩15,000 which includes a whole chicken stuffed with glutinous rice and one large ginseng root. The piping hot broth was heartwarming in the cold weather while the chicken meat was very soft and tender. I especially love the glutinous rice inside the chicken which was full of flavors.
